Workplace Standards

The University of Notre Dame is committed to creating and maintaining a principled workplace. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is dedicated to upholding this core conviction and strives to cultivate a vibrant community of faculty, staff, and students in which respect for others is paramount. Per the University’s standards of conduct, your membership in this community will be jeopardized if you engage in any of the following:

  • Sexual or discriminatory harassment (see University definitions)
  • Abusive or harassing behavior
  • Actions which compromise another individual’s academic progress
  • Willful damage to the reputation or psychological well-being of another
  • Theft or unauthorized possession of University or personal property
  • Other actions inconsistent with the University’s standards

If you are the target of any of the above behaviors, the University and the Department are poised to help. A conversation with any of the individuals listed below is a good place to start:

Outside of the Department, the following individuals and their offices are available:

  • For graduate students: John Lubker, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Graduate School (
  • For undergraduates: Amber Monroe, Student Title IX Program Manager (; Heather Ryan, Director, Office of Community Standards (
  • For staff and postdoctoral researchers: Sarah Biggs, Human Resources Consultant for the College of Science (
  • For faculty: Maura Ryan, Vice President and Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs (
  • For reporting suspected criminal activity (including sexual assault) or suspicious activity: Notre Dame Security Police (574-631-5555)

You may also talk to any faculty or staff member with whom you feel comfortable. It is important to know that if you have been subjected to sexual or discriminatory harassment, members of the Notre Dame community with whom you share this information are obligated to report these transgressions to the University’s Title IX Coordinator who will review the circumstances and recommend the appropriate actions. Anyone reporting or involved in an investigation of sexual or discriminatory harassment is protected by the University’s Non-Retaliation Policy. You may also share any grievances with confidential resources including the University Counseling Center, University Health Services, and Campus Ministry. Conduct that cannot be categorized as sexual or discriminatory harassment, but that is nevertheless antithetical to a professional environment, will be handled locally with engagement, as appropriate, with the following offices: Office of the Provost (when the alleged offender is a faculty member), Human Resources (when the alleged offender is a staff member), or the Office of Community Standards (when the alleged offender is a student). As with sexual or discriminatory harassment allegations, those reporting untoward conduct on the part of other members of the University community are protected by the aforementioned Non-Retaliation Policy.
