Brandon Ashfeld, Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Tengfei Luo, Dorini Family Professor for Energy Studies, are collaborating on new technology to desalinate water with a smaller energy footprint. By combining directional solvent extraction (DSE) with ionic liquids, they have developed a system that effectively desalinates water using ten times less energy than traditional DSE methods.
