Synthesis and imaging studies of novel optical/X-ray contrast agents
Highly qualified chemistry graduate student applicants are sought for a collaborative Ph. D. research project starting Fall 2010 to produce next generation imaging probes for detecting damaged bone and cartilage in living patients. The successful applicant will join the research groups of Professor Thorfinnur Gunnlaugsson in the School of Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin and Professor Bradley D. Smith in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame. The research involves chemical synthesis of the imaging probes and evaluation of their performance in collaboration with imaging experts in The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and the Notre Dame Integrated Imaging Facility. A competitive stipend and travel allowance will provide for long-term visits to both institutions. The successful applicants will have an excellent undergraduate academic record in chemical science, some previous research experience, and an interest in chemical synthesis and molecular imaging.
