The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is pleased to announce the promotion of Katharine White to associate professor with tenure.
White’s laboratory focuses on determining how intracellular pH (pHi) dynamics regulate proteins, signaling pathways, and cellular behavior. This information is then used to identify critical molecular mechanisms that influence both normal and cancer cell behaviors. She has also created new tools to manipulate pHi in very controlled manners both relative to time and location, enabling the study of previously intractable experiments for understanding how pHi can be targeted for the treatment of abnormal cell growth. Her research success has been recognized with a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s New Innovator Award (DP2), a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and selection as a Scialog Fellow of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement.
White received her B.S. in chemistry from Saint Mary’s College and her Ph.D. in chemistry from MIT. She then completed an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. She joined the University of Notre Dame in 2019 as the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor.
