Juan Del Valle, W.K. Warren Family Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, is one of three recipients of the 2026 Rev. Edmond P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Teaching. This is the university’s most prestigious teaching award, acknowledging sustained excellence in the instruction of undergraduate, graduate, or professional students.
Professor Del Valle is recognized for excelling at teaching complex ideas in ways that connect with students and spur their understanding and interest. Even though his primary subject is organic chemistry for non-majors, typically one of the hardest courses on campus, students regularly comment about his dedication to creating an environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. Students praise his relatability, his genuine concern for their success, and his impact on their future confidence in scientific endeavors. Del Valle is also recognized for his early participation in the Mary E. Galvin Science & Engineering Scholars program, being credited as a key contributor to the program’s success.
Professor Del Valle received his Ph.D. from the University of California San Diego and his B.A. from Carleton College. He joined Notre Dame in 2019 after being on the faculties at the University of South Florida and Moffitt Cancer Centers.
