"Advancing Biomedical Research by Capillary Electrophoresis-mass Spectrometry-based Multi-level Proteomics"

Abstract:  Diseases are typically caused by cellular processes going awry, which are controlled by proteoforms and protein complexes. Accurate and comprehensive measurement of proteoforms and protein complexes in biological systems (i.e., cells, tissues, and biofluids) using mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics is essential to discover more effective biomarkers for early diagnosis of diseases and for therapeutic development. The extremely high sample complexity requires high-resolution separations of proteoforms and their complexes before MS. During the last nearly 10 years, our research group has been centering on advancing capillary electrophoresis (CE)-MS-based multi-level proteomics to measure peptides (bottom-up), proteoforms (top-down), and protein complexes (native proteomics) in complex biological systems with high sensitivity, high throughput, and high proteome coverage. In this talk, I will first introduce our most advanced technologies for top-down and native proteomics. Then I will talk about several examples of biomedical applications in colorectal cancer metastasis, Alzheimer's disease, and nanomedicine.
