Depression and anxiety can affect anyone, but it affects graduate students at alarmingly high rates.  It is a real biological disease and is treatable.  Recognition of the risks, signs, and symptoms and knowing how to support and encourage graduate students to seek help can improve a graduate training program's ability to ensure the complete success of their trainees.  This talk discusses the disease depression, describes its epidemiology and biology, especially as relevant to graduate students, and facilitates discussion of stigma as well as how and when to get help.
