Chemistry Faculty Members Receive Undergraduate Teaching and Advising Awards

Three faculty members from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry have received awards from the University for exemplary work in undergraduate teaching and advising.

Xavier Creary

Xavier Creary, Charles L. Huisking Professor of Chemistry, and Amanda Hummon, Huisking Foundation Inc. Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, have received 2016 Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C. Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. These awards recognize faculty members who have had profound influence on undergraduate students through sustained excellence in teaching. Recipients are selected based on input from both colleagues and students.

Amanda Hummon

Prof. Creary specializes in teaching organic chemistry and is a repeat winner of the Joyce Award. He was previously honored in 2011, and he is also the recipient of the College of Science Shilts-Leonard Teaching Award (2007), the Kaneb Teaching Award (1999, 2002, 2006), and the Thomas P. Madden Teaching Award (1993). His ability to engage students and clearly present difficult material is consistently praised. Prof. Hummon teaches chemistry to non-science students and analytical chemistry for majors. Students contributing to her nomination remarked on the excitement and enthusiasm that she brings to the classroom. In particular, her incorporation of real-world examples of the concepts covered in her lectures served to resonate strongly with her students.

DeAnne Goodenough-Lashua

Dr. DeeAnne Goodenough-Lashua, has been selected to receive a Dockweiler Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising. The Dockweiler Award honors three faculty and staff members each year who demonstrate a strong and lasting commitment to undergraduates by exemplary mentoring, academic advising, or career counseling. Dr. Goodenough serves as the academic advisor for all biochemistry majors in addition to teaching the biochemistry labs. In her nomination, students praised her passion for and understanding of biochemistry and the caring and dedication she regularly shows for them.
